Day 99 - 9 Mile Run (14.48 km)
Since this past weekend was lazy I opted to do my long run today, for a final hurrah since the half marathon is on Sunday. The nerves have definitely set in. After my long run I left the gym and returned about an hour later for 15 minutes on the elliptical to warm up before some leg work. Did some work on the stairs and then medicine ball squats. Threw in some windsprints and then did some farmer's walks with 35 pounds. Looking back today seems kind of all over the place so hopefully tomorrow will get me into a more organized mindset.
Day 100 - 5 Mile Run (8.04 km)
Yesterday was a rough day on my legs so rather than 5 miles (8.04 km), I opted for 3 (5 km). Originally I planned to run outside, however it was pouring all afternoon. After that I just wrapped up with cool down cardio on the elliptical and figured I'd do another run on the treadmill tomorrow.
Day 101 - Rest Day
SO I got tickets to game 5 of the Toronto Raptors vs. Brooklyn Nets playoff series and with work earlier in the day it was a given that today was going to be a rest day.
For the record WE WON and it was an amazing game.. Totally worth it!
Day 102 - 3.2 Miles (5 km)
I can't even put into words how rough I felt waking up this morning.. Insta-migraine and all over the place. Didn't get as much sleep as I would've liked since I got in pretty late and had to be up early; I really am surprised I even made it out to the gym. Did a quick 5k on the treadmill and then a 20 minute cool down on the elliptical. Finished off with 10 sets on the stairs alternating between every other stair on one trip up and every stair on the other. A pretty decent day of cardio before tomorrow's rest day.
Day 103 - Rest Day
I already knew that tomorrow I'd want to go for a 2 or 3k shakedown run so I planned to take a day off today. Worked a short shift in the morning and headed to the expo with my friend Kim who isn't running on Sunday, but wanted to pick up some swag for herself. =) The nerves really set in today.
Day 104 - 2 Mile Shake Out Run (3.21 km)
Went to the gym today for a short run just to shake out the nerves that are still there. Can't wait for tomorrow! These past 15 weeks all come down to this.
Day 105 - RACE DAY!!!
Today at the Mississauga Marathon I ran my first half marathon. I felt challenged and I feel beyond accomplished. Check out my race recap here!
Total Workout Days This Week = 5/7
Total Training Workout Days = 77/105
Total Week Mileage = 50.02 km
Total Training Mileage = 313.99 km
Days to My First Half Marathon = 0 days!!!!
Day 92 - 6 Mile Run (9.65 km)
Today was the day I drove back from Ottawa and I wasn't even sure if I was going to be able to squeeze in this run. Looking back I should've gone for a run before leaving Ottawa, I was just feeling really lazy. Ended up going to the gym just before 1900, which ended up being perfect since the gym closed at 2000 since it was Easter Monday. Had just enough time to do my full run, nothing else though.
Day 93 - Gym Day/Stretches
As the day gets closer, the number of butterflies hanging out in my stomach just happens to increase. Today I did about 40 minutes on the elliptical at the gym to get in some cardio and then I did the recommended Nike Training Club workout and stretched at home. These stretches were something I needed… My legs are feeling great, for now. I'm sure Q is going to wreck them tomorrow.
Day 94 - Gym Day
Although I've been active the last 3 days I can say I can definitely feel the decrease in the intensity of my workouts. It's time to taper.
Today I had my weekly schedule with Q, however before that I did a brief 20 minute cardio warmup on the elliptical. He was admittedly grumpy, which didn't have me the most excited for my session. Started off with a farmers walk with 45 pounds per hand and an increasing number of squats in between. After that I did stair jumps with pushups and burpees in between. Then came the pistol squats, which killed me - I'll be working on these. Finished off with leg raises on a machine with medicine ball squats in between. It was definitely a difficult workout, but I'll be working on all of those things and getting better.
Day 95 - 6 Mile Run
Went to the gym today after work and I'll be honest and say that I didn't really want to be there. Partially because I'm not a fan of the tempo run, but mainly just wasn't in the mood. Ended up doing a shorter tempo run and then some work on the stairs. Skipped out afterwards and headed home.
Day 96 - Rest Day
As per the schedule, I took today as a rest day.. I had a lot of errands to do today so it worked out quite well. I also got a decent amount of sleep.
Day 97 - Rest Day
Had to make today my rest day, since I had plans with the ladies to celebrate Laura's birthday with a Buffalo shopping trip. I have a feeling this half marathon may kick me in the butt after all the rest days I've had these past 2 weeks.
Day 98 - Rest Day
Woke up and I was planning on going outside or to the gym to do what should've been yesterday's long run... That didnt happen. Looks like the long run will come tomorrow and I'll just have to make some adjustments to my week.
Total Workout Days This Week = 4/7
Total Training Workout Days = 72/98
Total Week Mileage = 15.63 km
Total Training Mileage = 263.97 km
Days to My First Half Marathon = 7 days!
Day 85 - Rest Day
Rest Day was amazing! Haha.. No, but seriously it was. It was nice to take a day off and do something different, especially after yesterday's 10k race. Ready to get to it for the rest of the week though, especially since there's less than 3 weeks to go.
Day 86 - Gym Day
Today was probably one of the roughest days I've had in the past 12 weeks or so. Outside of this past Friday I haven't really been in the gym since I left for Miami so it was really rough to get back into a routine of sorts. I started off with some light cardio on the treadmill and just ended up doing 2.5k on the stairs. After that I did some work on the stairs and then wrapped up with arms and abs/core. Hopefully tomorrow goes well.. I'm nervous since it's my first session in about 2 weeks with Q and I feel like he's going to kill me.
Day 87 - Gym Day
I'm in pain and today Q was being nice to me, or so he says. Unfortunately, I didn't get to the gym on time for a warmup so he had me jumping the stairs to start. After that we did a lot of leg work and my calves are feeling it. Wrapped up with work on the core. I know I'll be feeling this tomorrow.
Day 88 - Rest Day
Today wasn't intended to be a rest day, however an impromptu long weekend trip to Ottawa to see the older sister came up and I jumped on it. The drive to Ottawa wouldn't have been so bad if my calves still weren't burning. Not sure if I'll even be able to make tomorrow a good workout day. I think I need to get my legs massaged. Help!
Day 89 - Family Day (Rest Day)
Since today was the first full day since I came up to Ottawa it was more like a family day. Lazed around the house and didn't do much, but I didn't eat that much bad stuff either. I must also add my calves are still in pain.. Going to have to go for a long run this weekend, just not sure how that'll fair.
Day 90 - Lazy Day
And today was probably just as active as the last two.. Not sure how my long run tomorrow will go, other than it might kill me. I have to say being around family has been nice though. You win some, you lose some. Calves still hurting.. Not sure if there's something wrong. Gonna take it easy on tomorrow's run and hopefully all goes well.
Day 91 - Long Run
Decided to take my lazy butt out for a run.. I'm surprised I even put my runners on considering how lazy I've been this week. It wasn't easy but it wasn't hard. I'm satisfied.
Total Workout Days This Week = 3/7 … Yeah, I'm sure that should've been higher.
Total Training Workout Days = 68/91
Total Week Mileage = 16.64 km … I'm also sure this should've been higher.
Total Training Mileage = 248.34 km
Days to My First Half Marathon = 14 days!
Day 78 - 5 Mile Run (8.05 km)
Being in Miami I figured it'd be great to be able to do my 5 miles outside in a warmer climate rather than on a treadmill. It was definitely rough since I've only run outside once since I started this training and the weather was much different; overall the run felt great, however there were some slight breaks and it took me longer than it normally would - outside in the cold or on a treadmill. I'm disappointed with the time of this run, I got out there though and that in itself was a challenge.
Day 79 - Switching It Up…
Today I decided to go for a walk rather than a run. Worked in my favour since it was hotter than yesterday and I got a chance to wander and enjoy the scenery and my surroundings. Ended up doing just about 5k, which put me in a good place for the day. Success!
Day 80 - 5 Mile Run (8.05 km)
Today was supposed to be a tempo run, just ended up running abour 6k and then walking the rest. It was nice out, however the climate is something to get used to. Looking forward to going more runs outside when I get back though!
Day 81 - Rest Day
Today was a full day with coming back and all that jazz. Opted to make today a rest day.
Day 82 - Gym Day/Semi Long Run Day
I have to be honest in saying I was all over the place today. I was going to try and do my long run of apx. 19k today, however my legs weren't feeling it. I did about 11k, before giving myself a break on the treadmill. After taking about a 15 minute break I did 20 minutes on the elliptical, followed by some arms and abs.
Day 83 - Rest Day
Knowing that yesterday was an intense day and what I have in store for tomorrow I've opted to take today as a rest day. No burnout for me.
Day 84 - Toronto Yonge Street 10k
Race Day - today was a really great day, plain and simple. Check out my race recap here!
Total Workout Days This Week = 5/7
Total Training Workout Days = 65/84
Total Week Mileage = 40.13 km
Total Training Mileage = 231.70 km
Days to My First Half Marathon
= 21 days!
Day 71 - Beast Mode Monday (Or Gym Day.. Your pick)
I don't even know how to classify today, except for I felt like I was running on beast mode. Started my workout with a quick 5k on the treadmill to warmup, and then did 3 sets of 10 reps going up the stairs. Then I did about 40 minutes of work on legs and finished off on the elliptical for a cool down. AND its only Monday...
Day 72 - 3 Mile Run (5 km)
3 miles somewhere I've never run before and that is what I did. Plans got adjusted slightly for today, which turned into a good thing. I ended meeting Laura at her place for work and we decided to go for a run outside. We went around 1715 and it was pretty nice outside even though it was slightly windy. We did more like a 10k run and did it in a great time. That was a shocker, since the last time I ran outside was the Valentine's Day Run back in February and then in Cuba in December before that. Hoping Q takes it easy on me tomorrow since I've had 2 intense days in a row; that's definitely wishful thinking though.
Day 73 - Gym Day
Today was my now regular weekly session with Q and I'm pretty sure he had it out for me. I did about 30 minutes on the elliptical before the session, which I should've held off on. He knew I wasn't going to be coming in next week since I was going to be away, so he definitely worked me out to my limits. Did a lot of new stuff with him and I have to say that is something I really appreciate about him - he keeps it fresh and continues to challenge me. As per usual he finished off the workout by saying "I'm surprised that you made it through that.. Can't wait for the next one."
Day 74 - Gym Day
Yesterday was a pretty intense day even though it was just 30 minutes with Q. Today made my body feel so strong but so weak at the same time. Did some cardio on the stairs to start and then about 45 minutes of weight training. Focused on squats and dead lifts among other things. I must say that squatting over 100 pounds feels so insane.
Day 75 - 11 Mile Run (17.7 km)
Long run day should really be preceded by a rest day or an easy day, which is what it says in the training schedule that I haven't really followed this week. My legs were feeling everything I've done this week, so I ended up cutting off my long run just shy of 11km. I wanted to finish, but I also want to make it to my half marathon so hopefully some rest will rejuvenate my legs and get them back at it.
Day 76 - Rest Day
With what my day was going to look like I knew going into this week that there was potential for this to be my rest day and then with how my legs felt post workout yesterday it was decided. Now hopefully my training stays on track.. YYZ --> MIA.
Day 77 - Rest Day
SO nothing is gonna happen for today. Its the first full day in Miami and a Sunday. I deserve the extra day off.
Total Workout Days This Week = 5/7
Total Training Workout Days = 60/77
Total Week Mileage = 24.35 km
Total Training Mileage = 191.57 km
Days to My First Half Marathon = 28 days!
Day 64 - 4 Mile Run (6.43km)
I was out of town as of Sunday, however had to make sure that I got in my training. Decided to go for a run in the hotel gym in the morning and got it out of the way. Felt great and I'm glad I stuck with it.
Day 65 - Gym Day
Today was back and shoulders day during the training session Laura and I had today. Everything for me was going well until we started to do some wind sprints; my left hip flexor was hurting throughout the day and then during the sprints it seemed I over compensated and strained a muscle in my right quad. I bought a foam roller and did a whole bunch of stretches so I'm hoping it feels better tomorrow since I have a half hour session with Q.
Day 66 - Gym Day
Had a 30 minute session with Q today, which went really great. Had a lot on my mind and I have to say didn't think about any of it during that half hour, which did a lot for me. Did a majority of the work on legs and then finished up with abs. Also did 30 minutes of cardio on the elliptical and about 20 minutes of stretching to follow. Feeling really tense in my shoulders and upper body so I think I'll end up going for a full body massage on Friday night, that way I'll actually make it through my long run on Saturday.
Day 67 - Short Intervals
Today I wanted to take it easy since I've been fairly sore and stiff. Did my speed intervals, which worked out to just over 2k. I ended up doing some sets on the stairs and then left off with about 15 minutes on the elliptical. I guess today was a pretty good cardio day.
Day 68 - Rest Day
Taking it easy was the theme for today. After a long day at work I went for an hour massage and it was definitely worth it. Long run tomorrow!
Day 69 - 9 Mile Run (14.48 km)
My long run was not the easiest thing I've done, however I made it AND in less time than I thought I would. There were points I really had to push myself and I think that was in part to the fact that the TVs weren't playing anything interesting and my iPod died at around 11km. My only fear now is I've gotten somewhat used to running on a treadmill, so I've really got to get back outside.
Day 70 - Gym Day
Wanted to take it easy after my long run yesterday so I focused on arms and abs today and wrapped up with 30 minutes on the elliptical. Now I'm just looking ahead at the next 2 weeks since I've got the Yonge Street 10k coming up and I've still got to manage to fit in all of my training for the half, even though I'll be all over the place. 5 more weeks to go!!!
Total Workout Days This Week = 6/7
Total Training Workout Days = 55/70
Total Week Mileage = 16.64 km
Total Training Mileage = 167.22 km
Days to My First Half Marathon = 35 days!
Day 57 - 3.5 Mile Run (5.6 km)
I was feeling really good today, killed my workout. Started it off with the 3.5 mile run and I have to say I felt unstoppable. Did about 20 minutes or so of legs and then wrapped up with a brief cool-down on the elliptical. Today was a success.
Day 58 - Gym Day
I'll be honest when I say today was frustrating. Originally Laura and I had a training session planned for today, that got cancelled at the last minute. When I say last minute I mean we were already at the gym doing our warm up on the elliptical. We ended up doing the stairs (2 sets of 10). The stairs are just a flight up to the second floor of the gym and we go up skipping every other step. A really good cardio/hill workout. After the stairs, we did some work on arms and then called it a day.
Day 59 - Cardio Day
I know that I had short interval hill training on the schedule for this week, I just can't seem to get myself to do it on the treadmill - feels so awkward. I mean the sprint intervals can be awkward too, just not as bad. Had a really short work day so after work I went to do about 30 minutes on the elliptical. Figured I would end up going back in later on with Laura so I didn't want to push too hard. The evening started with a short warm-up on the treadmill (I opted to do the run at a 4.5 with a 3.0 incline). After that, Laura and I did 3 sets of 10 on the stairs. Tried the StairMaster for the first time, which was interesting. I don't think I would do it on a regular basis, but I definitely felt it in my calves. Wrapped up with a short cool-down on the elliptical.
Day 60 - Gym Day
WOW. Not easy and I barely feel alive is how I feel about today.
First we did a weigh in and updated our measurements (weight and BMI) since it had been about 4 weeks and 8 personal training sessions in to our program. I've gone down 5 pounds and 3% in my BMI. I'm all smiles.
Then came the workout.. 1 hour of some hard training. It was a very cardio intense workout that came with work on the stairs (regular reps skipping steps, regular reps skipping steps with weights, sprinting up the stairs stepping on every stair, etc.), wind sprints, and a whole lot more that I don't remember at the moment.
Finished off with a cool down on the elliptical and was close to being unable to drive myself home.
Day 61 - Short Intervals (8 x 200m sprints)
Today seemed like a breeze. Did my short sprint intervals on the treadmill, followed by 30 minutes on the elliptical, and did a cool down on the stairs. In between all of the cardio I did 20 lunges per leg and 3 sets of 10 pushups.
Day 62 - 8 Mile Run (12.8 km)
Today's long run went alright, but definitely not as good as last week. I think my long runs go a lot better when I have more time off in between my previous day's workout (a full 24 hours), or a rest day beforehand. Keeping that in mind for next week.
Day 63 - Rest Day
Today was a rest day since I was headed out of town until Tuesday.
Made sure to stretch it out and take it easy since yesterday was a long one.
Total Workout Days This Week = 6/7
Total Training Workout Days = 49/63
Total Week Mileage = 20.93km
Total Training Mileage = 150.58km
Days to My First Half Marathon = 42 days!
Day 50 - Gym Day (Light Workout)
Today my right calf was giving me some grief so I knew I shouldn't do much that would put too much pressure on it. I did a short stint on the elliptical and then some squats and leg workouts on various macheines where there wouldn't be as much pressure put on my calves. Hoping I feel better tomorrow since its a training session day.
Day 51 - Gym Day
Feeling much better today and I couldn't be more glad, especially since its nothing serious. Today's workout with our trainer pushed both Laura and I to some limits. Evident improvements in our cardio and strength, which made me feel amazing. Pushed through the 50 minute workout like a trooper. Ended the day off with 20 minutes on the elliptical to cooldown. Can't wait to get back at it tomorrow.
Day 52 - 4 Mile Run (6.43 km)
Had an interesting work schedule today with an assignment in the morning and then another in the late afternoon/evening, which left me with a huge gap in between. Between the 2 assignments I opted to hit the gym to do my 4 mile run since I was feeling behind schedule with my runs for the week. The run went surprisingly well considering how my calf was feeling earlier in the week. Realistically, I'm surprised I even made it out to the gym since we had about 20cm of snowfall (which is about 8 inches), so I'm giving myself a pat on the back. =)
Day 53 - Rest Day
There was no ifs, ands, or buts that today would be rest day. This morning Laura had her wisdom teeth removed so after my shift at work I went to keep her company.
Day 54 - Gym Day
Took it easy today knowing what Saturday and Sunday had in store for me. Did a quick 1k on the treadmill to warm up, some arms and core work, and finished on the elliptical.
Day 55 - Gym Day
Today I had a half an hour session booked with Q and Laura took the day off since she's still resting post wisdom teeth removal. Got to the gym early for a 15 minute cardio warmup on the elliptical before he proceeded to murder me. Well he didn't murder me, just definitely challenged me. He prepped a 15 minute circuit that had me working every single part of my body and didn't allow for breaks in-between. Just when I thought I was done and successful, he had me do it all over again. The second time around was definitely harder, but it was a really good workout not only for my entire body but my cardiovascular endurance. Can't wait to see what challenge he has in store for me next week.
Day 56 - 7 Mile Run (11.2 km)
I shouldn't jinx it, but today was a breeze. Finished up 11k in no time. Bring on week 9!
Total Workout Days This Week = 6/7
Total Training Workout Days = 43/56
Total Week Mileage = 18.43km
Total Training Mileage = 129.65km
Days to My First Half Marathon = 49 days!
Day 43 - 3 Mile Run (5 km)
Some things got moved around today and it was a pretty crazy one, but I still managed to get into the gym just before 8pm. I didn't make today a heavy one - just did the 3 mile run
Day 44 - Gym Day
For some reason today's training session seemed to affect Laura and I more than usual. After getting through the usual hour Laura decided to head out and I did about 30 minutes on the elliptical. I don't really care to elaborate on the training session - it just wasn't easy.
Day 45 - Short Intervals (Tempo Run)
SO today was nice. Got off work around 1:30pm and went to the gym for an afternoon session. Felt amazing afterwards! It is definitely a different feeling compared to leaving the gym around 7 or 8pm. Did my tempo run, which went well considering it was my first. Wrapped up with a cool down on the elliptical. Saving my strength training for tomorrow's training session.
Day 46 - Gym Day
Today was supposed to be a training session day, however it got cancelled. Still made the most of the evening and went to the gym. Did a very short warm up run on the treadmill, a longer than normal stint on the elliptical, and then did a bunch of workouts focused on my arms and shoulders. In order to make up for today, the session that we have booked for Saturday is going to be an hour. Hoping that doesn't make the rest of my day a write off.
Wish me luck!
Day 47 - Rest Day
I already knew today was going to be my rest day and then when the thought of working out popped into my head of course my left knee started to feel funny. So much for any sort of workout happening today.
Day 48 - Gym Day
Woke up today, sick as a dog.. Felt like crap. Sore throat, runny nose, head spinning; all with a 1 hour personal training session ahead of me. Now today was a true test of my mental game. It was a hard workout to begin with and being sick definitely intensified that. Did a whole range of various exercises that worked out every possible area of my body. Leaving the gym I was slightly sore. Knowing I worked to my full potential while sick was something that really impressed me. Now to see if I can make it through my long run tomorrow.
Day 49 - 6.2 Mile Run (10 km)
I was definitely still feeling yesterday's workout so I already knew waking up that today was going to be a challenge. Well that, and the fact that I haven't run this distance in awhile and it was going to be on a treadmill. Oh and don't forget that I've been sick and I woke up feeling worse today. Fun times! SO I did make it through the run AND it was my fastest 10k to date.. all while I've been sick, dead, and dying. Hopefully I'm feeling better tomorrow morning though, otherwise I have a feeling that it is going to be a long week ahead.
Total Workout Days This Week = 6/7
Total Training Workout Days = 37/49
Total Week Mileage = 20.05 km
Total Training Mileage = 111.22 km
Days to My First Half Marathon = 56 days!
Day 36 - 2 Mile Run (3.2 km)
Today was my last day going to the gym in Ottawa and the trip definitely ended off on a good note. Did a full leg day with my sister, which was pretty fun. Then I convinced her (a girl that doesn't do any cardio) to do some time on the treadmill. I have to say that today was a success.
Day 37 - Gym Day
During my long trek home all I could think about was the punishment I had waiting for me at the gym and it was punishment alright. Today was focused on endurance while working out legs; it was a long hour let me tell you that. After the hour I did a short stint on the elliptical to cool down and was off on my way. This is going to hurt tomorrow.
Day 38 - Gym Day/Short Intervals
WOW. My legs feel like jelly. They almost felt like jelly going in to the gym, but definitely did leaving. Started off on the treadmill to get my intervals out of the way (it would've been great to do them on a track though). I then did some upper body and arm strength training, followed by stretches and headed home.
Day 39 - Gym Day
Training session fun was what I had today. Not gonna lie, my new favourite thing is deadlifts; AMAZING! Anyways, it was back and shoulders today with some more legs. I loved today. Parts of today were painful, but it was all good pain. Really looking forward to Saturday, well kind of. I'll have a new trainer for Saturday and it'll be the first time Laura and I train separately. Hopefully all goes well.
Day 40 - Rest Day
With the training session yesterday and one tomorrow early afternoon I figured that today was the best place to put my rest day.
Day 41 - Gym Day
I didn't die of separation anxiety during my training session today, incase you were wondering. It was actually a really good workout - after 30 minutes I was super sweaty and red in the face. I was challenged to a whole other level and I can't wait for the same thing next Saturday. It was a calisthenics/circuit workout and I learned a lot that I'll be incorporating into my workouts going forward. Thank you Q.
Day 42 - 5 Mile Run (8 km)
Today was pretty self-explanatory. Ran 8k and then did some weights. Felt accomplished.
And yes the churros I ate before my workout were delicious as ever. =)
